Prof Dr. Aldert Vrij

is a Professor of Applied Social Psychology in the Department of Psychology at the University of Portsmouth (UK). He earned a PhD in 1991 at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam (the Netherlands). His primary research interests are nonverbal and verbal cues to deception, resulting in almost 600 publications and more than 25,000 citations. He advises the police about conducting interviews with suspects. He gives invited talks and workshops on lie detection to practitioners and scholars worldwide, including police, homeland security, defence, judges, solicitors, social workers, fraud investigators, insurers and bankers. In 2016 he received the International Investigative Interviewing Research Group (iiiRG) Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his significant contribution to investigative interviewing.
